Slow Cooked Baby Back Ribs

Ingredients

  • 1 (3-1/2 to 4 pound) baby back pork ribs, cut into 3 to 4 rib sections
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon of paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne
  • 1/4 teaspoon of freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of thyme, crushed
  • Homemade or commercial barbecue sauce* (See "Necessarily Related Recipe" below)

Instructions

Rub the inside of a 6 quart slow cooker with olive oil. Combine all of the dry seasonings and rub all over the ribs. Stack ribs vertically in the slow cooker, with the larger cut bone side down, meaty side toward the outside of the crock. Cover and cook on low for about 6 to 8 hours. Uncover and dab sauce on the ribs. Cover, turn the heat up to high and cook for about 30 minutes or until well glazed.

Ingredients

  • 1 (15 ounce) can of tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
  • 1/3 cup of ketchup
  • 3/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 10 turns of the pepper grinder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Cajun seasoning (like Slap Ya Mama), or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon of dry mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon of onion salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon of hot sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Kitchen Bouquet
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Liquid Smoke
  • 1 teaspoon of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of pure cane syrup (like Steen's) *(See below again)

Instructions

Combine all of the ingredients together and whisk to blend.
Add two tablespoons to 1/4 cup of Maker's Mark or Jack Daniels, for variety.
*For the cane syrup, you can substitute pure maple syrup, sorghum syrup, or molasses

Easier-But-Still-Kick-Butt BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground mustard
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic, dried
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke 
  • 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
Mix all the ingredients together in a sauce pan and heat over medium heat just to boiling. Turn off heat and keep warm.
